discourage- if someone sees Jews doing something they are not supposed to be doing, they might not want to know more about it or be part of such a people.
encourage- spending a Shabbat with good Jews who will show u the beauty of Torah. Also, I know ppl who wanted to learn more after going away on a shabbaton or going to just 1 amazing lecture :)

good jews.... i mean orthodox when it comes to what kind. when it comes to personality, spend a shabbat with the ones who are good at explaining things and love having guests over. ppl who have Torah knowledge and live according to how Hashem wants. pick the ppl u feel comfortable with, someone who wont make u feel out of place. of course, u learn from experience. overall, i think u can judge if ull feel comfortable with certain family or not.
