I came to America in 1992 from Dushanbe. While growing up, I still saw that many Bukharian households had big, heavy carpets hanging on the walls, mainly in the living room. I don't see much of that anymore.
I have two questions:

What is the significance, if any, involved in hanging carpets on walls?
Do you or your loved ones still do that?

To be honest with you, we never even hang them back home in our house.. i think we had one in my parent's bedroom, but that was it.. I can't imagine to see one here in US, hanging on the walls... :D

I have two theories concerning this subject matter, but I am not sure whether they are accurate because I am making them up but here they are anyway: 1) possible that it could be that it was to keep the home warm in the cold weather, insulation in a manner 2) considering that they are so elaborate it may have been just for decoration purposes (like wall paper?)
I believe that some bukharian people in America still keep this tradition

We used to have one in my room few years ago, but after we moved, we just never put it up again....I guess it was too much of a bother.

they do that to cover the dirty walls lol :tongue12:

i really believe that it was a way of decorating a simple looking wall because if the carpet is very nice looking (tekintski kaver) it looks better on the wall then on the floor

Actually, there was a common expression: "Дети на головах ходят"...in that case what is the use to have a carpet on the floor when the children are used to walking on the ceilings and walls :party39:

Actually, it was not a Bukharian tradition. It was, rich individuals' way of decorating their houses. It is an art, that requires tremendous skills if done by hands. If you have ever paid attention, those rugs have beautiful, patterns.
Rugs used for the walls, in Central Asia, Middle East, and several other countries around the world.

Also, as it was mentioned previously by one of the members, rugs on the walls do keep the heat inside, and it also creates a cozy appearance, for people who are into such things. I have two beautiful Persian or "tekinski" (whatever it means) rugs on the walls at home. I'm doubt that I would continue this, when I'll have my own place. But who knows, may be I will hang few rugs at home, if I'll come across some gorgeous, handmade Persian piece of art.
