From time to time it’s good to know what’s happening in the world of technology. IT technology in fact is a rapidly changing field. The GPU powerhouse, NVIDIA has a 6 month product cycle and Google is up to something new every week. This is a quick synopsis of sorts to bring to head everything that has happened in the last week or so.
AOL and Yahoo are now planning on charging for spam. Yes you heard right, they will charge a fee to send people ads and such.
America Online will begin charging businesses to send commercial e-mail to its users in the first wide-scale use of authenticated e-mail to reduce spam. But some marketers affected by the plan, set to start in several weeks, call it e-mail taxation designed to create a new stream of revenue for AOL
Now while AOL and Yahoo are trying to make more money, Microsoft is once again on the losing end of a class action lawsuit. This time it’s in Minnesota public schools. Google on the other hand is adding chat functionality in its gmail service. There are also rumors about them starting their own global network. Even the lawyers talk about google like this discussion on fair use as applied to Google's Book Search. But then IP law is going through a lot of change
RIAA is at it again. Gosh, I mean pick on someone your own age for once. I mean I support protecting the artists and all, but finally realizing that you're one middleman too many and suing the same customers that pay you money is just crazy.
This is a 15-year-old girl, telling the story of how lawyers of a major industry group told her she had to commit perjury, just so they could win their case. Some might call that racketeering, and it's most certainly a highly illegal way to win a court case. The deposition strongly suggests that the RIAA knew they didn't have a leg to stand on, and that they were perfectly happy to do anything in their power to win anyway. Funny how rather than open their own wallets to settle, they prefer breaking the law themselves.
My last tidbit is on everyone’s favorite issue, spyware. It seems we are not getting any closer to a solution for this menace as spyware has tripled in the past year. Maybe we need to stop looking for free solutions and just pay Bill Gates to keep us hooked up. So either way you look at it, spam is here to stay. I move that we outlaw spam and have the guilty punishable by public stoning or the chinese water torture.
This is my summary of what’s been going on in the technical world. I know I didn't mention consoles or the issue on NVIDIA’s suspicious marketing tactics. I will save those for another time.
