In your case I would just ask the cable company and they will give you more info then all of us and they will explain it to you! Because all cable companys have diffrent rules!

I just spoke to the guy from the cable company and he told me that I need a wireless router. My question is; why do I need a wireless router if my laptop has tha capability to connect to the internet on it own, sometimes. The connection is weak but it still connects because it has wifi.

There we go. To make it high speed internet you need that thing! Get it?
TheGreatOne 02-20-2006, 10:16 PM Since you already have broadband, you probably either want a direct connection to laptop -- if you don't have the cable modem yet, they can install it, or wireless one.
If you do have it (and even if you don't have it), I'd recommend getting a wireless router. It'll also allow you to have more than one pc/laptop to be connected to internet simultaneously. You can get a fairly good one for about $40. I use Linksys and am happy with it.
What that will allow you to do is to roam around your place wherever you want and still have the connection, provided your laptop has wireless network card. If it doesn't, you can get one, but that's additional money. Hopefully, you bought it with wireless network card.
With wireless router, you can still connect using wires -- usually there are up to 4 connections available, but you'll have a choice of connecting wirelessly.
Hope this helps.
If you have any more questions of this nature, don't hesitate to ask.

You do not need a Router, your cable company supplied you with cable Modem which lets you cannect with wires directly to the cable and have access to the internet, however your computer saying that it has signals which there is a network available around your area which probably means somewhere around you has the Router and trying to connect sometimes you can connect but most of the time it will ask you for password.
You can build your wireless router to your cable modem and you will have Wireless the connections to the internet.
FriendlyPA 02-20-2006, 10:46 PM what is the best way to build a wireless connection in a private house (so that anywhere you go, you get to be connected)??

LastochkaFM 02-21-2006, 12:10 PM I have another question regarding laptop. One of keys "Q" came out and doesn't stay anymore because the plastic thing underneath [th key] broke. Do you know where I can get a replacement? I hope I explained clear enough

if your pc is protected by a warranty call your manufacturer and they should replace it for you or send it to you.

Sometimes the Internet companies provide you with a modem+router, which allows for wireless connection (e.x Verizon Modems). In your case, I believe that you are using your neighbors internet :D that is why your connection is weak. You need to find out if your MODEM has capabilty for wireless (which i doubt, because i never heard about cable modems with wireless connections). In that case you would need a router (don't forget to secure your router or your neighbor might enjoy your wireless internet too :) ).

Your computer should support wireless G 54Mbps card and just get a good router with 54Mbps+ and that will cover a large area in your house.
**When you encrypt the security on 128bit in the router, the range is lowered down, so I suggest to make a 64bit with MAC ADDRESS restrictions. Very good security and will cover a large area in the house.

I have been having a problem with one of my keyboard keys for a while too...I can't seem to find that darn "any" key that windows constantly prompts me to press in order to continue.

That's nice. When we had problems in the office because the hard drive wasn't working, it took Dell forever to replace the computers.
TheGreatOne 02-21-2006, 06:32 PM You can buy a standard keyboard for $15-20. If it's some sort of more expensive specialized keyboards, I'll think some more. :)

TheGreatOne 02-21-2006, 06:35 PM as someone has suggested, you are probably covered under warranty if it's only 1 month old.
