A man comes over to you on a particular occasion and says "The day before yesterday I was 16 years old and next year I will turn 19." How is this possible?

So on December 30 he was 16. (That is what he was saying) On December 31 he became 17. Today (present time in the conversation) is Jan 1 and this year he will become 18.
