Study Reveals Hackers Started Looking Beyond Microsoft - [Computer Software]

Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system isn’t the sole hunting ground of the hackers.

Those online crooks are more and more taking advantage of shortcomings in software made by other companies, too, a survey conducted by the nonprofit SANS Institute revealed.

The survey discovered that hackers targeted antivirus software and media players like Apple Computer Inc.'s iTunes during the first three months of 2005.

Their basic purpose was to take control of users' computers.

As windows users get security upgrades automatically, hackers are finding it difficult to inflict damage to it.

"Operating systems have gotten better at finding and fixing things and auto-updating, so it's less fertile territory for the hackers," Reuters quoted SANS Chief Executive Alan Paller.

According to the survey reported by Reuters, hackers make the most of security faults to get hold of credit-card numbers and other sensitive personal information from a user's computer.

The study found more than 600 new holes including 20 most dangerous security holes in 2005 so far.

Software by Oracle Corp. and Computer Associates International Inc., media players like Apple's iTunes, RealNetworks Inc.'s RealPlayer and Nullsoft's Winamp have also been severely affected by the hacker’s onslaught.

Even, renowned anti-virus products from Symantec Corp. F-Secure, TrendMicro and McAfee Inc have failed to curb the menace, reported Reuters quoting the survey findings.
