Natasha 03-17-2005, 01:05 PM Guys and gals, post the names you're saving for your children.
Also, has anybody stopped to think that we are not free to name our children as we please because our parents may not be able to pronounce these names?
For instance, I love the name Seth, or Sheit in Hebrew. Unfortunately, as hard as they try, my parents can only say Kaka.. :fight56: Aj plakat hochitsa..

I obsolutely agree on this one, :happy25: when it was time to name my kids, my wife and I had to take that under consideration and change some of the names...to more easy-to-pronaunce ones..

Which names did you like? And which did you end up using?
One of my cousins had a little boy and she and her husband named him Brian..which is a very beautiful name. My cousin's father called my father to invite him to the Brit and said that they named the kid Brain. Don't ask my why he gave away the name before the brit, that's a whole other subject. Anyway, now my uncle calls his grandson Bochorchik because he still can't get the name right.
simha555 03-17-2005, 01:18 PM well of of the choices was Valerie, and it didn't go well.... :evilgrin3

Good point Natashka, but I had a slight different situation. When time came to name our daughter, my mother-in-law (boshe ochamo :innoc08: ), was suggesting names that we couldn't pronounce. Ex: Bronislavna, B'lyor, and some others that I don't remember. It was so funny. If we couldn't pronounce it, forget about her american friends calling her by name.

I agree with the fact that we have a limited resource of naming our children. But our reason is different. We have to name our children after our dead relatives, which makes it really hard, since these names are very very Russian and almost untranslatable to English.
Non-Jews, are very lucky in this sense, they can name their children after their living relatives!!!! :)

According to Sefardik Traditions, babyes named after their living relatives.
Tssipa 03-17-2005, 03:52 PM I think it is a bad idea to name your children after the deceased. My mom named me after one woman she knew. Ona govorit, chto ta zhenshina bila boevaya (vsegda dobivalas' chego hotela), ochen' umnaya, i krasivaya. I moya mama reshila, chto esle y nee roditsya doch to nazovet ee iminem etoi zhenshini.
And I actually feel honored to be named after such person and not after a dead relative. Even though I think if that relative had a good life and was a good person then it would kind of be ok.

Well, in Ashkanadzi tradition. U cannot be named after a living person. I was named after my dead grandma, who I never met. And I am honored to have her name.
Just because 2 jewish traditions are different, doesn't mean that one is good and the other one is bad.

You're right, I did not mean to say that one is better than the other. I guess I only expressed my own opinion.
Also, even if Sephardi and Ashkenazim traditions are different, there are many people in my family, immediate and extended that were named after dead relatives.

They take a gong and whatever sound it makes after they bang it, that will be the name of the child.

And so can you. Naming children after dead folks is only a custom (minhag )not a law (halachah ). There is a difference.

Yeah but those who don't follow their minhag, go to gahenim. In hebrew Minhag is spelt gahenim backwards.

I don't want my kids to be a laughing stock bec. of their names. American's are really illiterate when it comes to foreign name pronounciation and spelling. My russian name is very long and I never even use it. Ppl mispronounce it, make me spell it more than once, it just exhausts my patients.

I was thinking of changing it, but haven't come up with how to change it. I had my chance to completely change my name when I took the citizenship test. I just dropped my father's name from it ( otchestvo) and left the rest. Didn't want to upset my parents in any way.

I dont think sasha, masha, vika, sveta, and pasha are hard to pronounce!!!!!! I am not suggesting that these should be the names used, but I am just trying to make a point that the excuse you give is not a valid excuse!!!!!

It is not an excuse at all. I am an observant jew, trying to lead an orthodoxy life style and why would I want to have kids named Ivanushka, Ivan or s/t in that order? :happy30: I would go with s/t like my avitar.

Now this is a good reason!!!! Because you are an observant Jew, and you associate names like Ivan with christianity, you are welcome to use some other name.

If girls don't like their maiden last name, they can always change it to husband's name ;). No need to go through the name change during the citizenship.

What if she does not like husbands last name? example Alla Suleymanova, nothing wrong with the name. But if her husbands last name will be Shimunov, What her initials would be?
