I think I am lucky that way too. Hashem has given me so much and I am thankful for that. But I have this itch to do more, if not for myself than for others.

8k/month is a min of 100k per year. What profession makes that much entry level?

To answer your question - Speech Therapist. :) :) :) :)
If you are making 100K+ a year then you have a job that requires you to work extra hours or take on more responsiblities or perform a job that most people will not do(nursing)

401k is a good idea if your company matches its even better. You usually invest in mutual funds in your 401k. If you are new to stocks then do as much research as you can before you invest in them. They are risky. If you want a risk free investment put your money into CD's or T-Bills. Ask your bank about CD's and if you want you can buy treasuries direcly from the government from the following site http://www.treasurydirect.gov/indiv/products/products.htm.
Everything else you invest in research it, because everyone is full of it.
Good luck!

I have a job that nobody really wants to do........including me :)
You cannot pay me enough to be a nurse. They get no respect for the sh*t they put up with. Unless of course, with the RN license, I opened up a nursing home or "senior living facility"......
Speech therapy is an idea I like. MadisonB, are speech therapists in demand? I mean once schooling on it is done, what does the job market on it look like?
Thank you for your input.:)

ok, just want to get one thing straight, just because you need a speech therapist does NOT mean you are mentally retarded.. it just means you werent born with the ability to speak properly or to say some of the letters.
For example, I, myself, had to take a yr or 2 of speech therapy bc I couldnt say a few of the letters AT ALL and e.one teased abt it but that does not make me mentally retarded and there are plenty of others who take speech therapy classes bc of the inability to say letters before the classes.
now dont get me wrong, not e/one who takes speech therapy classes is not mentally retarded, its just not all of them are.
(sorry if I seem a lil harsh, just a lil stressed out abt regents)

i actually witnessed a session. a little boy that i know (2 years old---the sweetest kid ever) with a speech therapist. there was so much improvement and the boy was saying words that you'd never hear otherwise. it was amazing. and the boy had fun. and we all see changes in him...he's more social and talks more. so yes, it's not always with mentally challenged children.

exactly and I am not the only one.. e/time I bring it up in class, theres always a girl who says she also had speech therapy classes and she may be one of the nicest girls in the school
SpanishGuitar 06-13-2007, 08:01 PM people who've worn braces before (no not me) , they sound wierd, they too get speech therapy??

no
I had braces a couple of yrs after I had speech therapy classes and I was fine, the only reason I hated braces was bc I had to wear night braces (idn how to explain it, if you know what I am talking abt, good, you know why I hate it, if not, please ask s/one to explain it to you:)) A lot of people with braces speak perfectly fine, with no problems and they dont sound wierd
OceanofMemories 06-13-2007, 10:06 PM i used to have braces too...about 2 years...no weirdness with speaking at all. and now i have a pretty smile too :happy64:

A regular speech therapist does not make 100k a year on an average their salary is 65k max 80 k. May be if they work two jobs like center based and homecare and that’s working morning to night it’s possible. But working normal hours they don't make that much. An as far early intervention goes that area is really slowing down now. Before in just by doing home care for children 0-3 year old . An SLP ( a licensed speech pathologist) would be able to make as much as 100k that is if she had a full case load now it’s very different. So before any one chooses this profession just for the money sake do more research on it.

On the other hand you can get an office job that will pay you the same sallary or more and have a 9-5 work days.

Adinachka 06-14-2007, 06:14 PM When looking for a career, dont try to find s/th that pays a lot but u dont enjoy doing it... find a couple of things u enjoy doing and then choose one which pays more
SpanishGuitar 06-14-2007, 06:33 PM Different people enjoy different things. I got a job that pays well, but I don't enjoy it. Thanks a little to boojle and my coworkers it makes it a little fun. It's called coping. My last job I worked at many years and it paid pennies...BUT i was constantly challenged and always dealing mostly with people...some nice...others PMSing on regular basis. But I liked it. I was managing the place mostly and had it running like a well oiled machine. I miss that. Now I mostly work in a nice office 9-5. It doesn't bring out the best in me. No room to create. No room to see a problem and try to resolve it. No autonomy. No training newbies. Where oh where is the excitement?
OceanofMemories 06-14-2007, 06:51 PM Coping? More like supressing creativity and true happiness.

crusher2186 06-15-2007, 01:46 AM ROBERT IS BACK FROM THE DOMINICAN...(lol just thought i would say that)
speech pathology is a great job. my mom works with them, however the demand for them has fell. The best job is teaching...as bad as it sounds, it is a great job. you only work 9 months a year, get paid pretty well, you get all jewish/christian holidays off, and its less than 9 to 5...you wont ever get paid 200 grand, but to get that much, i have to do another 4 years of med school (not including the other 3 for my phd)...yea, maybe i will get paid a million a year, 10 years from now, but think about how much work I have to put in to get there....you want a lot of money fast? business major is is the way to go, but u will work long hours and u wont like ur job...
choose what u like, not where the money is, and the money will come from the love of the job ;-)
leahzav 06-15-2007, 08:45 AM Its interesting that everyone recommends choosing a field that you love but what if one does not have any thing in particular that he loves or he is good at. Then what would any one recommend, how do you choose a career path when you have no favoritism to any thing? There are many occupations out there in the world but how does one pick the right one that fits him/ her?
leahzav 06-15-2007, 09:01 AM Do you do HR?
Yes to some degree.
Benefits, Background checks, recruiting, accounts payable, marketing and general office management. This I do at my current job, I worked in other fields but still can’t find the right area for my self ever since I graduated college.
At times I like it and at times I feel I am not doing some thing that takes out my full potentials I would like to learn further but not sure what to get my Masters degree in.
I find it difficult to choose the right profession where you have mental and financial growth and main thing self satisfaction.
OceanofMemories 06-15-2007, 09:15 AM i had that problem too. i had no idea what i wanted to do. so i thought i'd go for my lifelong dream of becoming a teacher. i did one crazy semester in college and in seminary and in assistant teaching/teaching pre1A.
and then i thought...what in the world am i doing? is this really what i want to do with my life? i left seminary, i left college, and i left teaching. i drove everyone crazy but i knew i had to do it because my heart wasnt in it. y drive myself crazy? y have no time for family? y be overloaded and stressed from work? y travel from one place to the next and have no time to eat? it was the craziest 4 months of my life.
after i left, i just decided to wait. i asked Hashem to show me what i was supposed to do with my life. what was something that i loved? what was something that involved giving to ppl? what was something i was interested in and probably will always be interested in? and then it hit me...naturopathy and homeopathy. all that time i'd been reading about it on the side and sharing it with ppl and helping them transform their kitchens and eating habits and giving them a tip or two about how to feel better or about specific issues. i dont know y but i never thought to do it for life. and ever since i got into it, i have never been happier. it involves using my creative force and brings out my potential every day. of course, this is just for me...since i found something i love. for other ppl, it will be different things.
ull probably end up making more money at a job u love because ull be expressing positive emotions and and if u dont know what u love...go exploring. look within. think about ur great qualities and what ur good at or what u'd like to be good at. ask G-d to show u. most of all, be patient. want it, but be patient. and an idea will come to u.
leahzav 06-15-2007, 10:36 AM ..naturopathy and homeopathy. .
What school are you studying in? Are they aproved by DOE?

very well put. i personally do not love anything that would involve work. i mean, how can someone really love something that impedes on "fun time"? At the same time, i am a person that i call "adaptable." Basically means that i can adapt to anything or anyone, given enough time. So in actuality, i could do anything as a career. So you start by the process of elimination. What do you dislike? with me...i wanted to be a lawyer, but i hate to read, so there goes anything to do with english and lots and lots of reading... Then you focus on what u are good enough. my best subject has always been math...so any career with numbers is awesome, right? WRONG, i am GREAT in math, but that doesnt mean i wanna do it for the rest of my life....looking at numbers and a computer screen would kill me. NEXT...i am great in chemistry...hmm, science...and finally, what will fulfill me and make those around me happy? My dad wanted a doctor in the family more than anything else. he would trade all the money he has for a doctor in the family...so why not make him happy? and there came my decision...my dad wanted an MD...i love chemistry and the stuff done with chem and bio in the lab...and so the MD-PhD was the career choice for me. I dont "love" it, but i will love it.
The last way to choose it is to make sure you dont want to sleep on the job after only getting 4 hours of sleep...something that will challenge you and keep you thinking because if u dont use ur brain, it degrades on you :-)

It sound like your parents played a great roll in your career choice and I think that’s some thing I was missing. When I turned to my parents for advice in a career choice they really had nothing to offer. With immigration and adaptation to the new country they were too busy with them self and we kind of just grew up with no real emphases on our personal capabilities or talents. Now I understand as a parent my self it’s so crucial to be on a lookout of traits in children. If you see they seem to do well in some thing encourage it , Pahvalit detey vovremya ochen vajna. That develops strong a self a steam and assertiveness in personality and skill.
