What is it?

The ICHEIC Service Corps, (ISC) is an initiative in its 2nd year developed by Hillel, sponsored by the International Commission on Holocaust Era Insurance Claims, and in partnership the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, Inc. Its goal is to enhance the lives of Nazi victims and Holocaust survivors, many of whom have little family or social networks, by college students committing to a year of weekly 1 hour friendly visits. In some schools, in conjunction with the visits, students can receive course credit by registering for a course offered on their campus. The program will offer opportunities for learning about the Holocaust, its impact on public life today and reflection on the experience of working with survivors.

ICHEIC Service Corps is currently offered at multiple schools in New York and at the University of Miami.

New York:

What is required of me?

You will be expected to be a regular friendly visitor to an elderly Holocaust survivor or Nazi victim with whom you will be matched, and participate in peer-to-peer sessions in order to process, share stories, hear speakers and problem solve. If you choose to take the academic course, regular attendance along with fulfillment of course requirements (requirements vary by school) is expected. A small stipend to cover expenses associated with the visits will be provided.

Beginning this program is beginning a relationship with a Holocaust survivor. One where he/she will share stories from the past, questions for the future, and where you’ll share your stories, laughter and thoughts. Once this meaningful relationship has begun, it is important for it to continue for at least a year. Statistics from other visiting programs have indicated that volunteers continue their visits on average for 4 years.

Where do I sign up?

You can participate in the program with the option of receiving course credit at a number of New York City colleges. Other colleges may also offer course credit for independent internship, for which the ISC Program may qualify.

Course Credit is available at Hunter College, Baruch College and Queens College.
