Catch-22 is a military term that is confusing and difficult to describe. In short, its basic meaning is that if there was a rule, no matter what the rule is, there is always an exception to it. It is a mysterious regulation that is in essence a circular argument. This catch keeps Yossarian in the war because a concern for one's own life proved that he is not really crazy, and to get out of combat you have to be crazy. The catch is used by the superior powers to uphold and increase their power, and yet it is harmful to those who do not have power in the first place. It creates situations where, when you think everything is perfect, Catch-22 pops up and makes your plans impossible.
In other words, the phrase catch-22 means a cyclical conundrum, or no-win situation. Read the book "Catch-22" by Joseph Heller to find out the details. :tongue21:

So what was catch 22 when Bernard. J Ebber the CEO of WorldCom. was convicted of securities fraud, conspiracy and seven counts of filing false reports with regulators and thus sentenced to lifetime imprisonment. How did the judge use catch 22 on him?

I am not too familiar with the case, but if I have to guess I would say that because his unethical actions resulted in enormous financial damages involving millions of people, admitting guilt wouldn't do him any good. He'll still have to go to jail for a long time.

No I am not. I just wanted to know what catch 22 means. But why is it called catch 22?

it comes right after catch 21 and before catch 23. kind of made sense for them to call it catch 22. :)

The book is about a pilot during WW2 who refuses to carry out military missions over Germany.
Army concludes that he is insane. Catch 22 is that a person has to be insane to fly over Germany with such a high casualty rate.
Basically, it really isn't him who is insane, but rather it's other pilots.
