View Full Version : Are these BUKHARIAN Truths or Myths?
QueenofLilies 07-03-2005, 04:36 PM As you may already know, within therealm of each culture there are many beliefs. Na primer, shtop ne zglazet, mbl tri ras po stuchem na dereva. Being that i am bukharian, I am mostly familiar with this culture, although I am well aware that many other cultures' beliefs interlap. For e.g., in the example above, even American tap wood with their knuckles 3 times not to jinx a situation.
Below are some Bukharian beliefs or myths? I don't know myself, I just know they exist :)
1. If you have small ears, then you will live less than a person with big ears.
A.K.A the bigger you ears, the more you will live.
2. If you step over someone's body, it is bad luck.
3. If you encircle someone, constantly, that person will soon die or get sick
4. Kto dolga zhuyot, tot dolga zhivot.
{I am sorry if some of these situations have to do mostly with life or death :lolb: }
5. If you are bodily very hairy, then you will be financially succussful in the future.
6. The bigger your lips, the more generous of a personality you possess.
7. For Bukharian girls, if you are careless about house cleaning, then you are most likey to marry a bold husband.
QueenofLilies 07-03-2005, 05:27 PM Another one is...if you sew a pice of cloth while the peson is wearing it, thenthat person will be diagnosed with some sort of sickness.

In Judaism, it's not good to sew a piece of cloth while a person is wearing it because that's what they do with a dead person. If this is being done to you, then you should show some kind of action, like chewing gum.
Executive 07-03-2005, 05:54 PM Well I have noticed the ones about body hair and big lips to be very true.. I myself have big lips and i'm very very generous :).

lol, me too..., the lips I mean
OceanofMemories 07-03-2005, 08:30 PM I personally do not believe in superstitions. I learned once that we are not allowed to because everything is in Hashem's hands. Believing in such things shows a lack of faith in Hashem.
When u encircle someones body by accident, would u rather worry about whether they will die or not? or not worry about it because Hashem is in charge?
Jew4Life 07-03-2005, 10:44 PM I personally do not believe in superstitions.
What happend to your stuff(similar to this topic) you were working on? :party36:
Executive 07-04-2005, 12:25 AM I wouldn't call them "superstitions". There are certain laws in nature that we can't quite understand. They aren't physical laws, that can be proven. For example, "magic" aka sorcery, is simply a way of manipulating nature symbolicaly to yield a certain result. The process might seem ridiculous when being carried out, yet it creates the desired result. For example performing acts with apples can be used for attracting loved ones. Seems meaningless for us on the physical plane of existence, however, metaphysically this results in a certain outcome. It is manipulating nature.
My point is, that what we call "superstitions" are mearly warning signs that tell us if we perform a certain one of these actions, either intentionally or unintentionally that it may produce an undesired result. This principle can be applied to keeping Shabbat, Kosher, tefillin etc. Most dont understand the implications and consequences thinking its all a symbolic or religious waist of time, yet they dont understand that these laws have major metaphysical impacts. They are rituals in themselves... Now since we're on this topic, I'd like to give a tiny piece of additional relative information.
The Torah for example basically teaches us how to live life as to avoid the pitfalls of many laws of nature. Examples: Ayin Hora usually affects those who live without modesty, the greedy experience loss (Karma), you reap what you sow and others.
We as physical human beings are governed by the Mazalot (zodiac & planets). Our ego's are controlled by fate (astrology), that is why those who live by their ego and let desire overcome them are doomed to be slaves to their destiny and are mearly puppets controlled by the planets.
The only way for us as Jews (or people in general) to be able to utilize our free will is to live according to the spiritual law, which i see as a guide book or owners manual on how to play the game of life without suffering. Spirituality allows us to get in touch with our inner Nishamo (soul) and truly utilize the power of free will that our divine soul possesses.

hhehehe, I guess if you really want to know, you will have to conduct a scientific experiment, with a sample that will represent "normal" distribution

Its not only Americans that do that. In russia they do it too.
Actually, when people say things like that, it is usually to prevent some problems that might arise from doing or not donig things. Since people dont always listen when they are told to do or not do something. It is easier to scare them, especially if they don't know much. Same concept, as when Italians used Greek gods to control the poor. Eventually, rich and high class Italians, forgot where it all came from and how it started, and they ended up believing in Greek gods.

Probably some person with big ears thought of this one. heheh
2. If you step over someone's body, it is bad luck.
yea, if someone would step over me, will get kicked in the butt. Wouldn't you consider that as bad luck? This one was used to promote proper conduct
3. If you encircle someone, constantly, that person will soon die or get sick
wouldn't you get annoyed if someone would do that to you?
4. Kto dolga zhuyot, tot dolga zhivot.
{I am sorry if some of these situations have to do mostly with life or death :lolb: }
hehe, in this one, if you will not chew your food properly you might choke on it and die.
5. If you are bodily very hairy, then you will be financially succussful in the future.
Im not sure about this one, but i think there is a correlation between high testosterone and excessive body hair. THere is also a direct proportion between testosterone and aggressiveness. In conclusion, excessive body hair-->aggressive individual-->"a go getter"-->sucessful
6. The bigger your lips, the more generous of a personality you possess.
lol, in other words, do you mean, "vsem dostanetsya?" lol
7. For Bukharian girls, if you are careless about house cleaning, then you are most likey to marry a bold husband.
another reason to blame a guy's problem on a female. C'mon this one is obvious.

The Romans merged with the Greek beliefs because their was a common link between their cultures and creeds.

Please excuse Miss Tssipa's feable attempts to justify & exploit these ancient and wise beliefs that have been inappropriately labeled "superstitions". There are many like her who are typical products of the system, brainwashed with scientific knowledge that they cannot properly utilize.... :D
Tssipa, you know very well that there are powers and forces that are beyond our control, yet you constantly oppose these beliefs with attempts to somehow explain these manifestations with scientific principles or label them as psycho-social phenomena... Accept the fact that certain things are not so easily explained and dismissed.. That being said, please read the following quote:
We should take care not to make the intellect our god; it has, of course, powerful muscles, but no personality.
- Albert Einstein

Sir Executive, no need to speak or apologize on my behalf. I did not appoint you as my spokesperson. So please, do yourself a favor and resign from that position. Thank you.

I know myself where i stand in terms of higher power and my beliefs. That being said, not everything has to do with, "powers and forces". Some things just require simple logic to dispel them, and these silly superstitions are one them.
